Though the WASL is only one indicator of performance and/or improvement, it serves CVES with another opportunity to celebrate.  In nearly all areas whether it be at grade level performance or cohort performance (scores in previous grade compared with subsequent grade), there are some superb things happening with the work and dedication from the CVES Team!

Working together for student success...

Education reform is about more than just testing. It involves raising expectations for students, parents and educators, making sure progress is made each year and creating incentives for improvement. Standards and assessment work together for improving student success.

Standards

Washington has high standards for learning and teaching called Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs). Based on the four state learning goals, the EALRs explain what students should know and be able to do, kindergarten through grade 10.Washington teachers, parents, businesses and community leaders created these standards with help from state and national experts.

Assessment

The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)  measures how well students master state learning requirements in reading, writing, mathematics and science. The WASL is not the only indicator of student progress, knowledge or skill – but it is an important one. The WASL reliably measures student proficiency in core skills and gives us a common measuring stick for the performance of students, schools and districts.

So, What Are We Doing at CVES???

The staff at CVES has worked to develop goals in the areas of Math and Writing.  We utilize WASL scores to help us identify areas that we can improve upon in our curriculum and instruction.  You can check out our complete School Improvement Plan by going to:

www.snoqualmie.k12.wa.us/schools/cves and clicking on the “School Improvement” link.  Much of the work that we accomplish on this plan happens through our Friday Early Release Days.  This Friday, teachers will be working at grade levels making sure they are all consistent with assessing “at standard” writing.

When Do Teachers Begin to Prepare the Students?

In essence, kindergarten.  The standards are embedded throughout the K-10 curriculum.  However, at grades 3, 4 and 5, teachers will expose students to “WASL type” problems so they are more familiar with the formatting of the assessment.  You can also attain released items from the state’s website for practice at home.

What If My Child Does Not Take These Tests?

At grade 10 it is a graduation requirement to pass the WASL.  Research has shown that success on the WASL in the earlier years breeds success for future years.  Furthermore, a child not taking the assessment, will count as a “0” for the school.  We are required by state and federal guidelines to sustain continued improvement—a zero would negatively impact our school.
